Gujarat assembly elections in December: Chief Election Commissioner

The Election Commission has indicated that assembly elections in Gujarat may take place in December because the term of the present assembly is due to be completed in the third week of January.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AK Joti said that in Gujarat more than 50 thousand polling stations will use the Voter Poll Verification Slip (VVPAT) system. This system was first used in the Goa elections this year.

He said that voting verification slip would be calculated on one of the booths of all 182 seats so that the number of slips and votes casted could be matched together. For the first time, the Election Commission will start the Sarva Mahila Voting Center in all the assembly constituencies of Gujarat .

Jyoti refused to say anything about whether the election would be in one stage or more. He said that the EC will consider the input collected during the Gujarat tour.

The team included 12 other senior officials including Election Commissioner OP Rawat and Sunil Arora. They spoke to the government and police officials on Tuesday on a two-day tour and met the representatives of political parties.
