Maharashtra Farmers Long March to Mumbai

Mumbai[mithilanchalnews.in]:-Around tens of thousands of farmers walked under the blazing sun for over 180 km from Nashik to Mumbai over the last six days. These farmers are demanding an unconditional loan waiver and transfer of forest land to tribal farmers who have been tilling it for years. They also seek execution of the MS Swaminathan Commission report under which farmers are compensated 1.5 times the cost of production and the MSP or Minimum Support Price is fixed accordingly.

In order to discuss all issues with the peasants, the Maharashtra government has speedily formed a high powered six-member Ministerial Committee. The protest is spearheaded by All India Kisan Sabha, a CPI(M) affiliated body.

Maharashtra government had announced a farm loan waiver in November last year. Last month, Maharashtra Governor Vidyasagar Rao said that over Rs.12,000 crores had been transferred into the bank accounts of 31 lakh farmers.
