Team India’s performance in ICC Champions Trophy, Champions Trophy flashbacks

After the ICC Champions Trophy started in 1998, Team India has made it to the fourth time in the final of this tournament. At the same time, Team India has become the world’s first team to play the Champions Trophy  final four times. India has made it to the Champions Trophy Final (2000, 2002, 2013, 2017). For the first time in 2000, India had to face defeat by New Zealand after reaching the finals. In 2002, the team was jointly declared the champion with Sri Lanka.

1998 Wills International Cup


In this first tournament of the Champions Trophy, eight teams took part. India’s journey began with a match against Australia. In which Sachin Tendulkar played 141 runs in 128 balls. India batted first, scoring 307 runs in the match, in response to the Australian team 44 runs behind The tour ended in the semifinals for India when West Indies defeated Team India by six wickets.

ICC Knockout 2000


In this tournament, Team India took the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly for the first time. The tournament took place in Kenya and players from Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh started their career. Team India clash against Australia in the quarterfinals. Earlier, Tendulkar, who took on the target of Glenn McGrath, spoiled his rhythm and then debuted in ODI cricket, Yuvraj played a memorable innings of 84 runs in this match. India reached the semifinals after winning this match and the team beat South Africa by 95 runs. Ganguly scored an unbeaten 141 in this match.

In the finals, however, Team India had to face defeat against New Zealand. Ganguly scored 117 runs in this match, but New Zealand’s all-rounder Chris Cairns scored 102 not out as India lost the hopes.

ICC Champions Trophy 2002


The third Champions Trophy happened in Sri Lanka in 2003, about five months before the World Cup. The tournament reached the India Finals without any sponsor in this tournament. In this journey, Mohammed Kaif’s first century and Virender Sehwag, who emerged as a big star in World Cricket, remained unbeaten on 117 not out in the quarterfinals. In the semi-finals India defeated South Africa by 11 runs and managed to reach the final. Rain interrupted the final match between India and Sri Lanka and then both the teams were jointly declared the winners.

ICC Champions Trophy 2004


This tournament became the team of Champion West Indies, held in England. 12 teams participated in this tournament. However, this tournament was disappointing for India. The team was forced out of the league stage after losing to Pakistan.

ICC Champions Trophy 2006


India got the chance to host this Champions Trophy. Fans hoped that Team India will get the benefit. However, the Greg Chappell-Sourav Ganguly controversy and the poor form of Tendulkar disappointed everyone. India could not travel to the semi-final in this tournament and lost out to Australia in Mohali and had to get out of it. This tournament won by Australia.

ICC Champions Trophy 2009


Three years later in 2009, this tournament was held in South Africa, where Team India had a pleasant memories of the 2003 World Cup. However, till the tournament, a lot had changed in the team. In the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the team lost to Pakistan by 54 runs in their first match of the tournament. After this match against Australia was canceled due to rain. However, the team definitely won the West Indies but despite all this India could not reach the semi-finals.

ICC Champions Trophy 2013


There were many things about the World Cup with the same format and the Champions Trophy. Then the ICC decided it would be the last of the Champions Trophy. Team India defeated England by five runs in the 2013 Champions Trophy final and won the title for the second time. In this tournament, India has also knocked Pakistan out.

ICC Champions Trophy 2017


Team India’s debut was very great in this tournament. In their first league match, India had defeated arch-rivals Pakistan by 124 runs. However after that he had to face defeat in Sri Lanka in the next match. But after this defeat, Team India came back with a bang and made a strong team like South Africa to make it to the semifinals. After defeating Bangladesh in the semi-finals, Team India became the first team in the world to reach the Champions Trophy final for the fourth time. Now India has a full chance, defeating Pakistan to defend their titles and repeat the events of the last tournament.
