New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to end the three divorces. The PM has responded by using social media and said that this is a big step towards empowering women.

PM Modi wrote on social media today, “This decision of the Supreme Court is historic. This will give equal rights to Muslim women and this is a major step towards empowering women. “

It is to be said that the Supreme Court today termed three divorces as ‘unconstitutional’ and ‘arbitrary’ and said that it is not ‘part of Islam’. The Constitution bench of five judges, in its decision to three votes against two, said that three divorces do not get constitutional protection.




Justice Kurien Joseph, Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman and Justice Uday Umesh Lalit said that three divorces are not a fundamental part of Islam, it is legally banned and it is not sanctioned even by Sharia. At the same time, Chief Justice Justice J.S. Kher and Justice S. Abdul Nazir said that the three divorces are an integral part of Islamic custom and get constitutional protection.

Justice Khehar in his decision appealed to Parliament to make a law in this matter. They banned three divorces for the next six months. Also appealed to various political parties that they forget their differences and make laws related to it.
