More than 90 people killed in floods, landslides in Sri Lanka, PM Modi assured every possible help.

In Sri Lanka, due to the tremendous rain since the 1970s, heavy floods and landslides resulted in more than 90 deaths, while 110 people have been missing. More than 20 thousand people have been displaced in seven districts, as the southwest monsoon has created a catastrophe, hundreds of houses have been destroyed and many roads have been broken. Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi has expressed his heartfelt condolences on this calamity in Sri Lanka and assured every possible help.

Prime Minister said tweet, “does mourned the loss of life and property from flooding and landslides in India and Sri Lanka. We are with Sri Lankan brothers and sisters. Our ships are being sent to relief materials. The first ship of relief materials will arrive on Saturday and the second Sunday in Colombo.

INS Kirch, deployed in the southern part of the Bay of Bengal, has been sent to Colombo to provide immediate relief to Indian Navy, Sri Lanka, who have been providing relief to Sri Lanka. Apart from the essential things like clothes, medicine and water, INS Jalash will also leave Visakhapatnam. Medical teams and helicopters are also being sent to Colombo with relief material in these vessels.

According to reports, Galle is the worst affected district, where 7,157 people have been affected. Dinesh Gankadada, Deputy Minister of Disaster Management Center (DMC) said, “We have seen the most rains since the 1970s .” Gankadada said, “We are doing relief work in some areas, while we can not reach some houses in the affected areas.

DMC said that the number of dead has increased to 91 and other 110 are missing. Gankadada said that the government has alerted international organizations for relief. Deputy Minister Karunaratne Paranvitana said that the Foreign Ministry is monitoring the situation and will seek help as per need.

Sri Lankan Air Force and Navy are working to provide relief through helicopters and boats to those trapped in the flood. Relief officials said that monsoon was expected, but the rains which were recorded were not expected. In some areas, more than 600 mm of rains were recorded, while in other areas badly affected, 300 to 500 mm of rains were recorded.

The Met Office has exceeded the peak of monsoon leading Ars Jyashekhar said, but is expected in the next few days and more rain. It is expected to be fast again on May 30. Officials said that most of the people were killed due to landslides in Kaltara and floods in Ratnapura district. He said that adverse weather has badly affected seven districts.

 

According to the Disaster Management Center, due to the ongoing rain in many parts of Sri Lanka, 7,856 people affected in 2,811 families in Sabaragamu in the western and southern province were affected. The Center has asked people to be cautious about the rising water level and asked to leave unstable sloping places and go to safer places. Forests have been harvested in large numbers for cash crops in Sri Lanka . Therefore, landslides often occur during monsoon in the country. Last year more than 100 people were killed in a landslide in the country.
