Indian institutions can deal with human rights challenges: US

The United States believes that Indian institutions have the ability to deal with the challenges arising due to cases of human rights violations such as murder of Gauri Lankesh in Indian journalists. Alice Wells, the acting Assistant Assistant Secretary of Southern and Central Asian Affairs, said this.

Ms Lankesh, 55, known for her left-leaning outlook and forthright views on Hindutva politics, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Bangalore on Tuesday.

During a hearing in a Congress sub-committee on South Asia, Ellis said that India provides “the most constitutional security” for religious minorities and America’s goal is to work together with India to encourage it to implement its constitution and laws.

“Any attack on the media is an attack on the fundamental right to freedom of expression of each member of society. I urge the Indian authorities to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice and this crime is punished,” Ms Bokova said.
