Calcutta HC sets aside Mamata govt’s restrictions on Durga idol immersion, wants separate routes for Muharram

The Calcutta High Court has shocked the Mamata Government of Bengal on the issue of statue immersion in West Bengal. HC has reversed the decision of the state government on statue immersion. The court has lifted the ban on immersion during the Muharram.

The court has said in its judgment that it can be immersed as early as 12 o’clock. The police have to make arrangements for this. The High Court has asked the police to prepare different routes for both programs.

Earlier, during the hearing on Thursday, the High Court had said that the ban was the last option. The court said that why the use of the last option is, first of all, the government has to take steps in a time-bound manner.

HC has said that why the government has not imposed a ban on anyone at all. The HC said that the government is using without any basic rights. The High Court said that the government can not change the calendar because you are in power and therefore can not withhold force for two days. The government has to be ready for all the circumstances.

A division bench of Rakesh Tiwary and Harish Tandon ordered the state government to demarcate separate routes for idol immersion and Muharram processions and ensure that they didn’t overlap.

“The police have to take immediate steps to ensure law and order if there are indications of trouble,” the bench said, instructing the director general of police and commissioners and police supers to maintain law and order.
