punishable offence Jail for 3 years for tampering with mobile phone IMEI number

The government has made penal offense in the tampering of MEI number of mobile phones, which can be up to 3 years in jail if found guilty. The government has taken this step to curb the incidents of mobile theft. The MEI number is the identity digital number of 15 digits for any mobile phone.

The Department of Telecommunications issued a notification on August 25. This step is expected to help overcome issues related to fake MEI numbers and help detect lost mobile devices. It is illegal to deliberately tamper with, remove or alter any international mobile device identification number of the mobile mentioned in the notification.

The new rule has been named the Mobile Equipment Identification Number in the Tamper-proof Rule 2017. These rules have been made in conjunction with Section 7 of the Indian Telegraph Act and Section 25. Meanwhile, the Department of Telecommunications is also implementing a new system under which all services of lost and stolen mobile phones of any network can be discontinued, even if its SIM or MEI number can be changed.
