BCCI can not decide to withdraw from Champions Trophy: Vinod Rai

The Comptroller and Auditor General (COA) on Tuesday clarified that without the approval of the CoA, BCCI officials have no right to make any decision about taking part in India’s Champions Trophy. Following the speculation about the participation of India’s Champions Trophy after the BCCI’s defeat in the elections against the revenues of the ICC revenue and governance model, Rai has commented on this.
Rai said, “Yes, we have issued instructions that any decision related to the ICC Revenue Model should be taken in the Special Meeting of the General Assembly (SGM), but BCCI Units have been told that they will not be allowed to compete with Champions Trophy Can not issue a legal notice in the context of the removal. ‘

The COA has been forced to issue this order because it has come to know that 10 trustees of former BCCI president N Srinivasan have gone on a teleconference where the option of withdrawing from the tournament and the legal action against the global institution was discussed. The BCCI’s SGM is to be held on May 7.

“Our information has been brought to our notice that some officials have teleconference and want to make a decision in the above case. It needs to be understood that such a decision can not be made in haste. Due to the withdrawal from the Champions Trophy, India will not be able to play in the ICC tournament for the next 8 years. Some members can not decide on this. ‘

Rai said that if the situation comes that India needs to withdraw from the Champions Trophy, then all 30 members eligible to vote in the BCCI SGM should have a unanimous decision. He said, “A fractured decision can not be held where some are in favor of withdrawal and many members are against this decision. If you ask me, then this big step should be taken only when all the 30 members unanimously decide that it is necessary to shrink. ‘

A section of BCCI officials wants to pass a proposal to take legal action against former global BCCI president Shashank Manohar. If the decision is taken to withdraw from the tournament in the BCCI SGM, then it is likely that the CoA can take direction from the Supreme Court. Last month, in the ICC Board meeting, the BCCI had to face a loss of 1-13 in the vote of the proposed revenue model.
